Dock20 is an organization of teachers and innovators in higher education.

The heart of Dock20 lies in creating conditions for great learning. For students, teachers and managers we create open spaces where they learn and collaborate, not hindered by daily routines and schedules. That gives inspiration, energy and the right tools for initiating meaningful change. This way we co-create tomorrow’s education.

“Learning is in my DNA. Directly after I was born, I started to learn about myself and the world around me. Everything was new and I was eager to discover, develop and grow. Move forward! My hunger to learn was infinite.

Finally I reached the age to go to school. The perfect place to pursue my learning. At least, that was what I thought…”

Do we accept a failing system?

Schools are still structured according to beliefs and principles from previous centuries: hierarchical and bureaucratic. That makes our education isolated from the outside world and defined to the last minute, with no space for uniqueness and improvisation. Beforehand it is determined what, when, how and with whom students learn. Education is often reduced to passive listening and shallow reproduction of knowledge in tests. In this system, many students feel like being a number and lack passion for deep learning. Dropout rates of 50% are no exception. And also teachers drop out. In the Netherlands, their profession faces the highest burnout numbers.
Do we accept this?

Another world presents itself

While our educational system originates in another time, the world around us changes rapidly. The social value of a diploma is decreasing. Jobs are created, while others vanish. We don’t know how the job-market looks like in 10 years time. Formal education doesn’t longer own the monopoly on access to jobs. Youngsters are becoming more entrepreneurial and they take ownership of their own learning.

Now, more than ever, the educational system is challenged to adapt to these changes. Fortunately, more and more schools start reforming from within. Schools that part from pre-defined curricula and foster ownership and autonomy. Schools that replace reproduction of knowledge for participatory learning. Schools that open their doors to the outside world and together with partners formulate answers to essential issues.

Dock20 as a partner

Over the last 10 years, Dock20 has become an expert in this field of transition. We are committed to co-create tomorrow’s education. Education that is firmly rooted in this constant changing world and in humans’ unchanging will to learn.

This commitment takes shape in programs for students, teachers and managers. For students Dock20 develops challenging minors, summer schools and other learning journeys that impacts students’ personal development and professional choices. Dock20 trains and inspires teachers in making their teaching practice more effective, participatory and fun. And Dock20 supports managers and other frontrunners in innovating curricula and building learning communities.

All Dock20 programs have a similar core: they are designed to create temporarily open spaces in the educational system. Here, participants learn and collaborate, not hindered by daily routines and schedules. We create time and space for meaningful conversations and for experimentation with new ways of educating. Fuelled with energy and new knowledge about tools, participants are inspired to initiate meaningful change.

Waarom Your Ideal Classroom?

Curriculum Design

Co-creating futureproof education

What is it?

A design school for teachers, managers and other educational professionals who would like to co-create and develop their new curriculum.

Dock20 facilitates this process by innovative design labs, leading taskforces, creating prototypes, organizing expeditions and developing didactic skills and competences of teachers who will start the new program with students.

There seems to be a lack of collective time to sustain developing education programs. In this Curriculum Design School, it is our ambition to stimulate co-creating, to translate social developments into courses and programs and to strengthen the connection between students, work field and schools.

For whom:

For teachers, program designers, managers and other education professionals, who like to spend collective time to renew their courses and make their education future-proof.

Introductieweek 2.0

Support in the classroom

Team coaching and help by designing learning experiences

In addition to our courses Your Ideal Classroom and Learning Experience Design, Dock20 supports schools there where it actually happens: the classroom. We help teachers to design new programs and guide teams in introducing innovative educational concepts.

Also, we assist teachers in designing meaningful learning experiences (courses, minors, etc.) that will leave a big impact on your students and boost their study progress.

What happens if Social Studies students feel what it means to be standing in the shoes of a homeless client? What if Law students experience the world behind legislation? And what if students see, feel and experience  what it essentially means to be a practitioner of their future profession?

Need help to give shape to new ideas about education? Let’s have a cup of coffee and explore where Dock20 can help.

Minor Exploring Leadership

Exploring leadership for students who want to make a difference

What is it?

An intensive minor program of 15 ECTS, where (international) students explore the latest leadership theories (head), reflect on their personal leadership (heart) and where they work in project teams on real live assignments from local assignment providers (hands). 35 students of the The Hague University of Applied Sciences scored this program with 9 out of 10!

For whom:

Students who are aware that they can make a difference with their talents. This program could also be interesting for program coordinators who need to add an (international/English) course to their program. The basis of the program is fully developed and can be adapted to any wish or program.

Let’s make learning meaningful

I am a trainer and learning facilitator in heart and soul. Building learning environments that inspire, energize and connect people is what I most love to do. I am convinced everyone has an internal drive to learn and to develop. I am at my best in creating the conditions that trigger that drive.

As a trainer and entrepreneur at Dock20 I build learning experiences that change the way people think about education. I my work I constantly try to be innovative. Not because new is always better, but because I believe we can create more powerful learning experiences by rethinking what education is about. Interested? Let’s meet!

I wrote an article about my educational story which you can read here.

Entrepreneur in heart and soul

I am an entrepreneur in heart and soul. The enterprises I’ve started have a strong focus on new ways of learning, sustainability and innovation. I have a keen interest in supporting the emergence of a new paradigm for education and bring that into reality by developing new learning methods for education. Together with a network of freelancing education experts we create experimental learning environments for universities, such as the Summer School.

Key questions I work with are: Why and how are systems changing? How does the bigger picture looks like? What new systems are emerging? How can we cope with change? How can you awaken, develop and stimulate your leadership skills? What is your role in all this?
